The longer Marcus lives within the halls of the Black Godz, the more he forgets about his old life of privilege and mundane pleasure. What he does remember is that the pleasure he thought he knew was not real at all. It was the pleasure of comfort, the pleasure of knowing nothing will change if he doesn’t want it to, that he is always safe within his room as long as he doesn’t open the door. He is shielded by money, by power, by class privilege. And he will never have to face the same struggles that so many of his peers will. This safety, this comfort is what his parents always wanted for him. It is what the rest of the upper class enjoys. But it is a safety and comfort that keeps Marcus from ever experiencing anything real. No pain, no joy. After years of this mundane existence, Marcus soon becomes dull inside. He can’t find any spark of joy or excitement, no matter how hard he searches. When Marcus was first approached by the Black Gods, he felt like he was finally getting the opportunity to join a household. It had been years since he had any sense of belonging or some kind of household life to fall back on. The worst part was that people thought that just because he came from a wealthy background that he had it easy. Many of his friends growing up would come to his house and remark on the cars or the clothes or the art hanging on the walls. Marcus has it good, they’d say. He doesn’t have to worry about anything. But what they didn’t realize was that all those things meant nothing to Marcus. The house was empty and his parents were gone. And while the lack of parental guidance made his place the prime destination for parties and all other kinds of mischief, it made Marcus’s life feel cold. How long could he stand being alone? Marcus has only gotten stronger as his stay in the House of the Black Godz continues. The softness of his upbringing, the pampered lap of luxury, has all but left the boy entirely. His immersion into tough love has taught him to fend for himself in the big city and has given him a new life and a new identity. In some ways, he has become even more street savvy than the boys who surround him purely because of his endless curiosity and desire to learn. He wants to become the perfect disciple to the Black Godz, and the only way to do so is to study their every move furiously. The Black Godz have taken notice of Marcus’s thirst for knowledge and willingness to go out in the field and try out his newly-gained skillset. They can see that if given the opportunity, Marcus will go to the ends of the earth for them, and they are pleased by his undying loyalty.
