"This day was one of the coolest days EVER. I spent the day at the most amazing elephant reservation. I learned about the seriousness of elephant abuse, how often elephants are hurt and killed by illegallogging and tourist riding, and how Sangdeaun Lek Chalet's incredible reservation is doing all they can to help. \n\nI'll be the first to admit that I had ridden an elephant in Bali, unknowing the sad truth of how much it hurts them and how miserable and in pain the elephants are. I feel a terrible guilt, even though I had no idea what I was supporting hurting them. \n\nSpending the day observing the rescued elephants, letting them enjoy their freedom, keeping distance and walking with them, was incredible. The rescued elephants suffer injuries such as dislocated shoulders, blown off feet from illegalmines, scars from trainers stabbing and beating them, cut up ears from trainers cutting them when they are too exhausted to work, and other horrific sadnesses. A few elephants even had their eyes gouged, tourtured, or stabbed out from refusing to work, some are rescued circus elephants, also blind, from the years of bright lights in their delicate eyes. Crying at the park was not uncommon but you leave smiling seeing how happy the rescued elephants are now free and safe from harm. The elephants are so happy with their new life and you can really see it in their face and eyes. \n\nThe reservation also rescues dogs, cats, buffalo, horses, goats, and even has a fat pig. It is animalrescue heaven. My favorite part of the rescue is the are they have for paralyzed dogs, like Darwin. The three paralyzed dogs they had at that moment were just as happy as the other dogs, barking, playing, and safe. I was so so so close to bringing one home with me, because the park does offer the dogs to be rescued and go to a forever home. I wish I could have taken them all home! \n\nThe day was full of emotion, happiness, and safe energy. Feeding the elephants veggie treats and watching them play in the mud...
